Recent research has shown how severe the problem may be. In one example discussed by Phil Sutcliffe and Josh Seltzer of Nexxt Intelligence, an AI tool called an “autonomous synthetic respondent” demonstrated a near-perfect ability to evade bot detection systems.
According to the study, the AI agent evaded detection 99.88% of the time, raising concerns that survey responses may increasingly come from machines rather than real people.
For researchers focused on maintaining response quality in surveys, this raises an urgent question: how can we ensure that the insights we collect still reflect real human perspectives?
Why AI bots are driving fraudulent survey responses
The reason AI bots are so effective is simple: large language models are designed to sound human.
“Large language models are trained specifically to reproduce human language based on huge amounts of data. So generating answers which sound plausibly human is actually pretty trivial,” says Josh Seltzer, CTO of Nexxt Intelligence | inca.
Many fraud detection tools rely on signals like:
Mouse movement
Clicking patterns
Behavioral patterns
reCAPTCHA checks
But these signals can easily be replicated by machine learning systems.
“Most of these rely on pretty simple statistical patterns of digital signals, and that’s precisely what machine learning models are really good at reproducing.”
As AI continues to evolve, detecting AI bot survey responses becomes increasingly difficult.
Why AI detection claims should be viewed carefully
Many tools claim they can detect AI-generated responses. But according to Josh, those claims should be approached with caution.
“Anyone that’s claiming that they can detect 100% of AI agents, in my opinion, they’re lying to you.”
One reason for this skepticism is how many detection systems are tested. Often, they are benchmarked against known open-source bots. At first glance, this might seem like a reasonable validation method. But it creates a significant limitation.
Sophisticated fraudsters are not restricted to those same tools. They can develop entirely new black-box AI systems that behave differently and easily bypass those tests. As a result, relying solely on detection technology can quickly turn into a constant game of catch-up.
For teams working in conversational AI market research, protecting response quality in surveys means going beyond detection tools alone and thinking more broadly about AI agents for data quality and how participants are verified in the first place.
A more reliable approach: start with verified participants
Instead of trying to win an endless technological arms race, the more effective solution may be simpler: focus on verified human participants from the start.

“The industry has dug itself into a bit of a hole by chasing the cheapest price without realizing just how cheap the usage of AI and the ability to mimic real humans was going to get.”
Addressing this challenge will likely require greater investment in areas such as:
Identity verification
Longitudinal participant tracking
Real participant communities
Of course, those investments come with higher costs. And they will only happen if research buyers are willing to prioritize data quality over the lowest possible price.
The reality is that fraudulent survey responses driven by AI are unlikely to disappear. If anything, they will become more sophisticated over time.
But data quality isn’t just about who answers surveys — it’s also about how those surveys are experienced.
